Welcome back to another exciting year at Grantsville Jr High, home of the Falcons!

At Grantsville Jr High, our mission is to care for, challenge, and inspire all to build a community of success and lifelong learners. As we begin this school year, we are focused on three important goals:

Improving attendance: Being at school every day helps students succeed academically and feel connected to our community.

Raising achievement: We are working hard to support every student and reduce the number of failing grades.

Building partnerships: We invite parents to play an active role in our school culture. Your involvement makes a difference and helps us create a strong, unified Falcon family.

Attendance Matters
Missing a day of school here and there may not seem like much, but absences add up.

When a student misses 2 days of school per month

The student will miss 20 school days in one year.
The student will miss 30 hours of math over one school year.
The student will miss 60 hours of reading and writing over one school year.
By graduation, the student will miss over 1 full year of school.

When a student misses 4 days of school per month

The student will miss 40 school days in one year.
The student will miss 60 hours of math over one school year.
The student will miss 120 hours of reading and writing over one school year.
By graduation, the student will miss over 2 full years of school.

Excusing an Absence on Skyward

To excuse a student on the app:

When parents sign up for the Skyward app, they will select a four-digit code.
Put in your four-digit code and continue to the app
Select the “hamburger button” (the triple bar or trigram symbol) on the top right.
From here you have two options, the first option (the message tab), will show you through the notification when your student was marked absent and what you need to excuse. With the attendance tab you simply submit a request.

Either of these two options will open a pop-up.
Complete the following information:

Date/Time
Reason
Comment (optional – but very helpful, especially if you want to “excuse 2^nd hour”)
If you have more than one student and want this attendance request submitted for another student (maybe your family will be attending a funeral and all students need to be excused) then you can “Copy” the request and select additional students.
Submit

To submit a request from the website:

Click on the Families tab across the top
Click on Skyward for Parents
Log in
On the top right click student (if you only have one student you will just see your student’s name)
In the drop-down menu select the student’s name you need to excuse
Select Attendance in the menu on the left hand side
Click on the hyperlink at the top of the page “Absence Request.”
An “Add Request” pop-up block will open
Complete the following blocks:
Date/Time
Reason
Comment (optional, but once again, very helpful)
Save
Once you have “Saved” you will receive an email notification that an absence request has been submitted.
After the request has been processed, parents will receive a notification in Skyward
“(Student’s name) Absence Request has been (approved or denied)
The Absence Request submitted for (student) on (date) has been (approved or denied).
If a request is denied, a reason must be provided. It will then say “Go to your Absence Requests for further information.”

Office Staff

Oh, the wonderful Grantsville Junior High. Having been a Grantsville native, this school has always been around. From Jr Jazz basketball games, to seeing the Jr high production of Grease and Hairspray, this school has always been here. In fact, it’s been around for almost as much as some of our parents have been! The school was built way back in 1983, where they had many grades, including fifth and sixth grade. We’ve been home to amazing teachers, like Ms. Lindberg, Mr. Mower, Mrs. Sagers, and the amazing Mr. Snow, who happened to be last year’s teacher of the year!

Can you believe that there were 4 grades at GJHS? The 5th graders were here from 1983 to 1993 and the 6th graders were here even longer, 1983 to 2002! This school that is now Grantsville Jr. High School used to be called Grantsville Middle School until they remodeled the school. There used to be Kivas that some of the classes would go in, until they remodeled. They remodeled the office, 8th grade hall and then took out the Kivas. The school was very crowded, especially when there were assemblies. Every once in a while the basketball games were busy also. Since it got really crowded the 5th and 6th graders left. That is when it was named Grantsville Jr High School instead of Grantsville Middle School. It is very interesting to learn about our schools past.

The junior high has been through a lot in its lifetime. The biggest, most prominent memory, was when the school burned down and they had to bus many, many students up here. I remember the day the elementary school burnt down. It was over the summer, and I remember going down there to see the wreckage the morning after, and my mom got to be interviewed while she was on the scene! The second memory, almost as popular, was when they added the new hallway onto the south end of the school year during the 2005-2006 school year. This added more room for classrooms, so we could hold more students.
